Gabriel

Gabriel Salazar Vergara was born on 31 January 1936. Vergara is Chilean historiography. The country is famous for his studies of sociology and his analysis of political movements. Particularly, he was prominent during student protests in the years 2011-12 and 2006. Salazar was born into a middle class family, he studied history, sociology and philosophers on the Universidad de Chile, and in the past, was an working as an assistant for the historian Mario Gongora and classical historian Hector Herrera Cajas. (1) Salazar used to be part of the Revolutionary Left Movement until 1973. Salazar was also tortured by the military in Villa Grimaldi that same year. After being released from the military prison camp, he fled to England. In the United Kingdom, he received one of the scholarships that enabled him to study further at University of Hull. He received an PhD on Economic and Social History from that university in 1984. Salazar returned to Chile in the year following. Salazar was able to make a breakthrough 1985. This is still relatively unnoticed. He studied peons as well laborers and proletarians. 1 Salazar is among the pioneers of the historiographic current known by the name of Nueva Historia Social. Salazar believes that history is an instrument to encourage actions of society.
